Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised as an sole daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two different job. She hoped to be an high school English teacher. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying, her dream of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. Following her first gigs singing at poetry events She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. Then, during Roots' show she came out as an artist. Following that, she started collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained performance experience during the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
